WHEN Reg England opened his advisory account with Hoodless Brennan 18 months ago he cautiously invested a significant five-figure sum.


Now the 59-year-old is one of the Bristol office’s most active clients with a portfolio six times its original size.

 

“It’s a clear indication of the good relationship I have with Hoodless Brennan,” he says.


“I never feel I’m being pressurised and that’s important to me. I always feel I’m making the decision.”


Reg began buying small amounts of shares eight years ago - merely as a diversion from his main investments in property.
But when the 59-year-old left his senior management job in the textile industry in 2003, he decided to let the hobby blossom.


“I had always read the financial pages and thought it was time to invest more money and learn about the stock market.


“I felt that, in fact, I had a reasonable level of success, in that I was always making in excess of my £8,000 capital gains tax allowance each year.


“I started branching out in larger amounts. I bought over 20,000 shares in one of the FTSE companies which turned out very successfully.”


Reg toyed with opening a Hoodless Brennan advisory account, before throwing his marketing letter from the stockbroker away - only to be called by its author Andrew Davis the very next evening.


“I suggested he resend the information and I would re-read it. I then rang him within a week or so and decided I might be interested in working with Hoodless Brennan.


“Advisory was very much a new area for me. But through my business career I’ve spent a lot of time dealing with people at all levels.


“The discussion I had with Andrew Davis impressed me, I thought his knowledge was great. I asked detailed questions and he knew the answers very clearly. I felt he was somebody I could work with.


“I’ve done business throughout the world and you have people in life who are either “can do” or “can’t do”.


“With Hoodless Brennan, on every occasion when I have been worried about a situation, there’s been a solution.”


Today Reg, who lives in Devon, talks through his burgeoning portfolio with Andrew around three times a week.


“This maybe to update me on the market, to have a general chat or we may end up buying or selling.


“In the relatively short time I’ve been with Hoodless Brennan, I’ve visited them on average every three months. It’s important to build the right business relationship. I think that on the three or four visits I’ve made I feel we’ve gained something each time.


“It’s important for me to know the people I’m dealing with and it’s more convenient for me to go to Bristol rather than London.
“But at the end of the day the major plus is how much money they make for me at the end of any period.”
