Retired senior executive Frank Sanderson started out opening one of Hoodless Brennan’s first online trading accounts, but now he and wife Sheila have branched out into many of the other services the stockbroker offers. Frank is very aware that these private equity schemes are high risk investments and are only suitable for experienced investors, but with decades of experience in senior positions, with Babcock International Group PLC and through a variety of non-executive directorships, Frank certainly qualifies.
“It can be a bit nerve-racking at times, but the tax advantages are substantial” he says.
“Basically our whole investment policy is to focus on capital growth rather than income, as we’re fortunate enough to have enough income to allow us to take risks that some people might otherwise not be able to”. The Sanderson’s began share dealing approximately twenty-five years ago.
“As a fairly active trader, commission costs with a traditional broker were a significant item and when online investing became available, I got involved early and initially used the online facilities of the in-house broker of my high street bank.” “When Hoodless Brennan announced the £7 fl at fee for online deals I took it up almost as soon as it became available.”
Gradually, Mr. Sanderson took up additional services through Hoodless Brennan, including private equity investments, many of which qualified for Enterprise Initiative Status (EIS). These offer investors tax breaks for putting capital into high-risk start-up companies which, if they develop into profitable businesses, can offer the investor the possibility of large capital gains without incurring tax liabilities.
Mr. Sanderson says the range of services offered by Hoodless Brennan allows him to move investments around quickly and easily between the various accounts.
The 78-year-old monitors market fluctuations by a real-time system for both his existing and potential investments and uses portfolio software to update his records daily.

This speculative form of investment offers experienced or professional investors, the potential of very high returns and substantial tax breaks. Unlike Venture Capital Trusts, Private Equity also provides some flexibility because you are not locked into a fund. However, these investments are less freely traded than quoted shares.
