Women Investors

Research has highlighted the increasing financial power of women as they become more financially independent:

  • 2.4m UK women claim to have more than £25,000 in savings accounts alone 1

  • Currently 25% more women UK millionaires than men aged under 452

  • Women to hold 60% of the UK’s personal wealth by 20252

Sara Shayovitz says her job as a night sister suits her perfectly - because it gives her plenty of time to play the stock market during the day.

The nurse lives near Fairfield Hospital, Lancashire, where she has worked for 25 years and now coordinates its nocturnal nursing. “It is a demanding job but I only work nights,” she says. “This fits in very well as regards share-trading.”

The 52-year-old first became interested in share-dealing in the late 1990s. “Everything was doing really well and it seemed an easy way to make money. When I got my fi ngers burned I gritted my teeth, started to read up on it and traded more carefully.”

She has had a Hoodless Brennan account for three years and deals up to eight times a month.

“I have always traded with an execution only broker because I do my own research. The Hoodless Brennan website is the cheapest option and fits my needs. I’m pleased with the service I have received.”

“I very much enjoy it and find the whole subject fascinating. One of the things you have to learn is to be disciplined and not to do it for the buzz because that can be a potential problem.”

Mrs Shayovitz says her everyday life can point her in the direction of certain stocks in the retail, travel and medical sectors. But she also relies on The Times Business section, Investors Chronicle and several websites to keep her on top of the latest investment developments.

“It is putting together all the pieces of a jigsaw and crossing your fingers a bit. It is informed gambling really. You learn from your mistakes, you learn what works for you. Different approaches to investing are all successful for certain people at certain times. I find momentum investing simply doesn’t work for me though contrarian investing does.”

“I do my own stock screening. There are certain criteria a company must meet before I will consider it, like not too much debt and it needs to pay a dividend. Experience means I’m into value investing rather than growth investing. It works for me.”
